If percussion gear were rated like cinema fare, drum kits, snares, and cymbals would be the thrill-a-minute, skyscrapers exploding, monsters devouring Manhattan action flicks. Hardware? Probably more like a grainy, black-and-white French film from the ‘60s, where two people sit silently in a cafe for 37 minutes sipping espresso. But edge-of-one’s seat excitement aside, hardware is critical to drummers doing their jobs, and that makes stands, pedals, clutches, and so on pretty darn sexy. And I’m sure every drummer has a story about another drummer going bonkers over some high-tech cymbal wing nut or a fast-release hi-hat clutch. Let’s face it — anything that makes our performance lives easier, setups less of a hassle, and comfort more, well, comfortable is just as exhilarating as Wonder Woman and Batman kicking some major bad-dude butt.
