Canopus – 4×14 Solid Bronze Snare Drum
A slim but ultra-thick drum with unthinkable sonic prowess.
Tokyo-based company Canopus, one of the world’s premier custom drum makers, prides itself on crafting some of the finest instruments on the planet. Over the years, we’ve tested many Canopus snare drums, drumsets, accessory items, and hardware pieces, and not once have we been disappointed. In fact, they’ve always over-delivered in terms of both sound and design. This month we have an extraordinary limited-run 4x14 snare drum with a solid 5 mm bronze shell to review. This isn’t your ordinary piccolo. Let’s check it out!
The Specs
The centerpiece of this exceptional drum is a heavyweight 5 mm solid bronze shell. If you’re unfamiliar with shell thicknesses, a typical thin metal drum is between 1 mm and 1.5 mm. A beefy bell brass snare, the benchmark by which thick metal snares are often compared, is 3 mm. So, this little guy is mammoth by comparison. What does that extra thickness mean? We will get to that in the next section once we start putting the drum to the test.
