Balancing Grunt Work and Creativity

This is a follow up to the March 2021 article I did for MD entitled “Practice Like a Pro.” (You can find it at moderndrummer.com.) In that piece, I shared techniques that can be used to effectively learn songs. Muscle memory, repetitive looping, recording yourself and listening back—as well as being able to identify trouble spots in a song—were a few of the topics. This month, I’m offering some tips to help you smoothly transition your practice ideas to the gig. When I’m not touring or working on a project, I really look forward to putting in some good practice time. I know that after I put in the hard work, I’m going to be adding a new vocabulary to my drumming.
