Another year has flown by, and what a year it was! 2021 is here and with it a new beginning. Modern Drummer is as committed as ever in uniting and inspiring the worldwide drumming community. It was in this spirit that we put together the twentieth edition of the Modern Drummer Festival, albeit virtually for the first time, on September 12, 2020. When I reflect on the forty-five years since the birth of Modern Drummer, it’s hard to believe how many innovations that our founder, Ron Spagnardi, created. In addition to, of course, the world’s first drum magazine, Ron published innovative drum books, such as New Breed by Gary Chester and Master Studies by Joe Morello, and then created the Modern Drummer Festival, which would go on to be so successful with nineteen years of groundbreaking, exciting drumming extravaganzas.
