Modern Pop/R&B Great Aaron Spears on How to Milk the Most from Basic Quarter Notes
“Drums are an extension of who you are,” says modern pop/R&B great Aaron Spears in a recent video lesson for DrumChannel.com. “The way you play them is up to you. There is no right or wrong way to play, as long as you stay within the parameters of the music. My advice is to go for it, have fun, make stuff feel good, and enjoy yourself.
“A lot of times we get caught up in trying to please people,” Spears continues. “You’re wondering if they’re better than you or what their thoughts are. You can’t worry about that. My motto is FTW: Forget the World. Be the best you that you can possibly be. If people don’t like that, that’s their loss. I feel that way really strongly when I’m playing.
“[But] a lot of times people forget what their job is on the drums,” Aaron adds. “Your job is to be the glue that keeps everything together. When you have the opportunity to express yourself, go for that. It’s important to be balanced.”
