Modern Drummer is concluding the year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Carmine Appice’s legendary book Realistic Rock, which has been re-issued by Modern Drummer with even more sections and is now called The Ultimate Realistic Rock. We are presenting one of those new sections called Realistic Linear Rudiments that …

Drummer, singer, songwriter, soloist, band leader, author, educator, innovator. It’s nearly impossible to describe Carmine Appice’s massive influence on the drum world. He sits near the top of Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the Top 100 Drummers of All Time. His Realistic Rock Drum Method is the most popular rock …

Continuing Modern Drummer’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Carmine Appice’s Ultimate Realistic Rock book, this month we present a sound often associated with Carmine’s playing in Vanilla Fudge, many of John Bonham’s Led Zeppelin grooves, and later with Dennis Chambers’ funky fusion playing, Sixteenth Note Triplets. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Carmine Appice Ultimate Realistic Rock, Modern Drummer is reprinting this classic section of Carmine’s book. Carmine Appice’s Ultimate Realistic Rock book is an educational standard in teaching “realistic” rock drumming. The title means you are learning drumming vocabulary (beats and fills) that you would realisticly use in a rock song or band. The recently updated version (called Ultimate Realistic Rock) raises the bar yet again …

“This is a custom one-of-a-kind job that Slingerland made for me in 2004,” says Carmine Appice. “It’s a hand-painted, lacquer leopard finish—not a wrap—on three-ply maple shells. It features 8×12 and 9×13 rack toms, 16×16 and 16×18 floor toms, and two 16×22 bass drums. What’s not in the photo is …

Excepted from Rudiments to Rock Carmine Appice designed Rudiments to Rock specifically to provide beginning drum students with fresh ideas and procedures. Through the book’s exercises and explanations, Appice takes novice percussionists from basic fundamentals to the more difficult, modern beats characteristic of today’s rock music. Rudiments to Rock was …

In one of those sci-fi-esque synergies of parallel dimensions, interviewing Carmine and Vinny Appice about their Hangin’ & Bangin’ livestream show is practically like being in an episode. Carmine’s enthusiastic rat-a-tat delivery is often gleefully interrupted with punctuations and elaborations by Vinny or vice-versa, and the interviewer can only face …

Sometimes before interviewing a musician, I find myself fighting a preconceived image I’ve gotten of the person. Perhaps it was a picture painted by another journalist in some other publication, or maybe the image was conceived in my own mind as a result of the kind of songs that person …

Anyone even remotely attuned to the heroics of rock’s heavy hitters knows the name Carmine Appice. A drummer whose work spans three decades, Appice’s place in rock history is well assured.

In a highly anticipated reunion, keyboardist Chick Corea and STEVE GADD co-lead a top-flight band in a mix of electric and acoustic jazz excursions with echoes of their mid-’70s brotherhood. Corea crafted most of the double disc’s original compositions with Gadd in mind, making it a dynamic showcase for the …

If any drummer in the history of classic rock can say he’s seen it all, it’s him. From defining the role of star journeyman player in the ’70s, penning a classic method book, and pioneering the rock-drumming clinic to setting the bar for rock-star excess that’s still referenced today, the …
The first time I met Carmine Appice was back in 1978 at a drum clinic on Long Island. That was the day we taped the interview that appeared in the April 1978 issue of Modern Drummer.
Rock is now over twenty years old and so are the techniques of rock drumming. Years ago, the simplicity of rock was looked down upon by the astute musician. Today, rock has become extremely complex and progressive.

The rock drumming scene has progressed a great deal since the fifties. Those of us who played through that era remember the monotonous eighths and afterbeats, and those relentless right hand triplets.

Since Vanilla Fudge, Carmine has anchored Cactus, Beck/Bogart and Appice, and KGB. Now he is the driving force behind Rod Stewart.
