Stone Insights from the Pages of Modern Drummer Given his stature in the drum community and his tenure in the world’s greatest rock and roll band, Charlie Watts gave few relatively interviews. For example, throughout MD’s 45 years, he only appeared on our cover three times. This, despite the Rolling Stones embarking on 14 major tours since Modern Drummer’s debut issue in January 1977, and releasing more than 31 studio, live, and compilation albums—not to mention all of the band’s classic, pop-culture-enriching ‘60s and early ‘70s records. The scarce coverage wasn’t all that surprising. While Watts was an essential and indispensable member of a massively famous band, he didn’t consider himself the celebrity that he was, and he reportedly felt he didn’t have much to say.
