To Master Your Craft, Go Outside of It

I have many favorite “drummers” that aren’t drummers at all: Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Eddie Van Halen, and Bruce Lee. These non-drummers have just as much impact on my expression as the great drummers. Sticking within your field, can make things feel stale after a while, devoid of any outside inspiration. If you wanted to be a master chef, only studying food would make you a mediocre chef. It’s exciting to see something you love in a whole new light! Combining influences from completely different fields may seem crazy at first, but following your intuition is what really brings out your voice. What eccentric influences would supercharge your drumming skills? Go outside your discipline to make connections most will never see.
