Lol Tolhurst and Budgie are Curious Creatures

Photo by: Louis-Rodiger It’s hard to imagine two other drummers from the post-punk era more influential than Lol Tolhurst from The Cure and Budgie from Siouxsie and the Banshees. Still to this day, you can’t turn on any alternative internet radio station for longer than a few minutes without hearing The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry” or “A Forest” or the Banshees’ “Spellbound.”  The Banshees also recorded one of the most captivating hit cover versions of  The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” which had Budgie on full display rolling “Ringo like” all over the kit. Lol and Budgie have their own unique aesthetic for developing their distinctive drumming patterns and explaining their 40-year involvements in those bands, and their influence is far reaching. Lol’s minimalistic beats always complemented The Cure’s lead singer and writer Robert Smith’s melodies perfectly until he moved to keyboards in 1985 for the Head on the Door album. Lol […]
