Rhythm Vocabulary Development Series Part 5: Playing in 7/8

In our last installment, we explored 5/8—how asymmetrical subdivisions and maximizing intentional “space” can unlock phrasing that is both musical and conversational. Now let’s push further into odd-time territory with 7/8. 7/8 might seem even more challenging at first. But with the right concepts you can use and grow your vocabulary and play in a time signature that feels that feels as natural as 4/4. Understanding the Pulse 7/8 is inherently lopsided: seven eighth-note pulses per measure means there’s no even subdivision like 4/4 or 6/8. Common subdivisions include: 3 + 4 (1-2-3, 1-2-3-4)4 + 3 (1-2-3-4, 1-2-3)2 + 2 + 3 (1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3)3 + 2 + 2 (1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2) Each subdivision offers its own downbeat, 3+4 can feel like a lopsided march, while 2+2+3 often has a dance-like, syncopated character.
