  • Longtime pop drumming star Manu Katché made a stop in North America this past summer for a few Canadian dates and a single U.S. appearance at the Highline Ballroom in New York City in support of his third ECM release, Third Round. Katché wrote all the music for the record, and it exemplifies the drummer/composer’s knack for creating and developing a special vibe in various forms. MD was at the Highline Ballroom to interview Katché for a Gearing Up feature, which is in the December 2010 issue. We spent a few extra moments chatting about Manu’s background. Here’s that discussion.

  • Hey, Modern Drummer fans! I hope you’re all busy playing your butts off out there! I'm going to focus on live music this time, because I was lucky enough to see two wonderful bands and two amazing drummers in NYC last month. First up was BRIAN BLADE and the Fellowship at the Village Vanguard. Whoa! Blade got right down to business on the bandstand, opening the set with a stunning bit of whisper-soft and often lightning-quick mallet playing. The music, alternately contemplative and raging, was hypnotic and often trance-like. The wickedly creative Blade played with sensitivity and bluster alike, using the element of surprise to his great advantage.

  • Hey, everybody, Nate Morton here with a quick update. I’ve been performing with Cher in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace, and the performances have been amazing, truly an extravaganza! • It all started in fifth grade music class. Everyone had to learn how to play 8th and 16th notes by tapping drumsticks on an old textbook, and if you had the guts to get up in front of the class, you could try yours on a snare drum (which meant that when you messed up,...
