I grew up in Detroit and moved out to California in August of 1988. Through a friend of a friend, I got the audition with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. My friend knew a girl who was dating John Frusciante. He told her, ‘I have your drummer, my buddy, Chad. He eats drums for breakfast.’ She tells John and that’s how I got the audition. I go to an audition at this place called Hully Gully in Silverlake that had these little rehearsal rooms. I walk in with my drums and there’s Flea. I knew of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I wasn’t like a big fan or anything. I was like, ‘They have a record deal?
