Great Grooves, Part 1

From a general viewpoint, the word “groove” suggests a certain rhythmic precision in group playing, not unlike the word “tight” or the phrase “in the pocket.” From a drummer’s perspective, groove can also indicate a particular rhythmic motif, which, when played repeatedly, with precision, takes on a certain musical flow and pulse of its own. The precise notational makeup of the groove may or may not remain constant, but the basic feel remains. I invite you to try the following grooves. Some are simple in makeup, while others are rather complex, but I trust they will offer you musical and coordinational challenges, as well as new ideas you may wish to explore further. (Hi-hat notation in parentheses indicates hi-hat is to be closed, not struck.)
