Carl Palmer Applied Rhythms

This month’s Basics contains a series of fills that are based on flams, and is included in Carl Palmers book Applied Rhythms. The idea here is to flam various 8th notes in the bar, and to voice the 8th notes around the drumset in different ways: between snare drum and small tom-tom, between floor tom-tom and snare drum, etc. The ten examples consist of one-bar drum fills that can, obviously, be repeated many different ways. The first time, you could play them as written; the subsequent times, you could voice them differently around the set. So that gives you the option to choose your own voicings but still keep the rhythmical phrase’s that are written.
