The Martial Arts of Drumming

The drum set covers a whole lot of physical space, more than most instruments. We must dance through it, like a painter’s brushstrokes. A fascinating fact is that our sound isn’t created by the tip of a stick hitting a drumhead or cymbal surface. It’s actually created by how wemove in between the notes. How you move is how you groove! The vibration comes from the strike, but our signature sound comes from how we choose to move in the gaps. Without space, there is no rhythm. Our sound is the result in a line of intention, idea, iteration, and impact. As the music happens, this martial arts like flow even happens during the rests.
