Excepted from Rudiments to Rock Carmine Appice designed Rudiments to Rock specifically to provide beginning drum students with fresh ideas and procedures. Through the book’s exercises and explanations, Appice takes novice percussionists from basic fundamentals to the more difficult, modern beats characteristic of today’s rock music. Rudiments to Rock was originally published in 1995, before being re-released and revitalized for the digital age by Appice and Modern Drummer Publications this year. “The book was based on many years of experience in teaching percussionists, thereby learning the needs of students in order to develop and coordinate hands, feet, and mind,” Appice says in his Introduction. “In the third part of the book, all of the various types of notes, rests, dynamics, and so on are integrated into studies of modern-rock patterns.
