There are several intimidating drum gigs that a drummer can step into, but I’ll mention one that might not come immediately to mind. The iconic band Chic. The original drum chair was manned by the legendary powerhouse drummer Tony Thompson, and after his death the (equally as legendary) Omar Hakim manned the throne for a while. I saw Chic in the 90s with Omar and I was absolutely FLOORED. Sitting down behind the drums and playing such influential music as the Chic catalog, is not a gig for the weak hearted. 18 years ago, drummer Ralph Rolle took over for Omar, and the Chic groove has been in good hands ever since. The groove was created by the legendary rhythm section of bassist Bernard Edwards, drummer Tony Thompson, and Chic’s bandleader the renowned guitarist-producer Nile Rodgers.
