My dear old friend, the late John Abercrombie, used to say when drinking his favorite breakfast beverage, “You know, there’s nothing like a good cup of coffee in the morning … and this is nothing like a good cup of coffee.” Ha. But, humor aside, there IS nothing like a good recording session to get your hands, feet, heart, and mind all on the same page. Such was the case a few days ago when I traveled from Los Angeles to New York City to go into the studio with stalwarts John Scofield on guitar, Uri Caine on piano, and Scott Colley on bass. The reason for my trip? Accompanying flugelhorn artist Franco Ambrosetti on his new album, with string arrangements by Alan Broadbent.
