Led Zeppelin “Hots On For Nowhere” drummer John Bonham

This month, we take a step back in time to spotlight one of the all-time great drummers, John Bonham. What more can be said about him that hasn’t already been covered? Our song of choice is “Hots On for Nowhere” from Led Zeppelin’s Presence. This funky, hip hop-type groove is filled with tight musical beats that perfectly complement both the bass and guitar parts.  When looking at the transcription, note that I’ve written everything in sixteenth notes for simplicity of reading. However, the feel should be played as a dotted sixteenth followed by a thirty-second note—essentially, swing the sixteenths.  Bonham had a unique ability to “drive the bus” like no one else. When he played, everyone followed, resulting in a thick, powerful groove that grabs your attention from start to finish.
