“Before the Lobotomy,” the fifth track on Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown, showcases the talent of brilliant punk drummer Tré Cool (Frank Edwin Wright III.) We chose this track because of its simple, yet powerful, odd time signature groove that forms the foundation of the song. If you’re new to playing odd time signatures, this is an excellent place to start. When it comes to odd time signatures, I always recommend moving beyond counting and focusing on feeling the groove and melody. This song is perfect for that approach. Instead of counting, just play and immerse yourself in the pulse that’s woven within and throughout the song.
