The Light Stuff

This month’s column will focus on practical playing devices that should serve you well when the music gets soft and simmering. A low dynamic “floor” invites the listeners in the audience to lean into the music. You might be surprised at how much easier the other musicians find it to play when the volume is soft as well. Welcome to the Light Side. The Light Stuff may require the Right Stuff, as in simpatico equipment. Heavy drumsticks with large tips produce a different sound compared to a lighter-weight stick with a cymbal-appropriate tip. It is okay to change sticks for different playing situations if your default stick is in the extreme one way or the other.
