This Pearl snare drum is one of two custom Free Floating snares that Tommy Lee used on Motley Crue’s 1987 Girls, Girls, Girls Tour. Both snares were 6.5 x 14 Free Floating models with custom red hardware. One snare has a steel shell, and this snare has a red lacquered maple shell. The drums were alternately rotated through the show allowing Lee to always have a freshly tuned snare. In 1978, Free Floating drums were invented and introduced internationally by Sleishman Drums in Australia. CB700 refined the idea in the early 1980s, and the CB700 Free Floating snare drum concept was eventually taken over by Pearl. Free Floating snares eliminate the need for any hardware to be screwed onto the actual drum shell. This allows the drum shell to fully resonate, uninhibited by any attached hardware, and allows the player to easily interchange drum shells of different depth and material. […]
