The word fusion gets a lot of use in this issue. Unfortunately, it’s become somewhat of a “bad” word in some musical circles. It’s (unfortunate) meaning has become the name of the style of music, born in the late 60s and early 70s from a blend of jazz and rock music created by Tony Williams, Miles Davis, and many bands like Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Return To Forever, and Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi and Headhunters bands. Some might say that the creativity of the original jazz-rock (or rock-jazz) evolved into fusion which was often heard as music with more notes and time signatures than taste. All of it later became a misunderstood falsification for a way that jazz musicians could gain popularity, acceptance, and money by making records for rock listeners and fans.
