What is the essence of a musician? How do we quantify their achievements, their history, their sound, and their very being? For many of us, such revelations came by way of LPs — oftentimes not-to-secret communications from the past, but just as often coded messages from the future (or so it seemed.) Jazz performances were a scarce treasure when it came to television back in the day. Now, we have YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, but I daresay that most of these performances are truncated and concentrated consumable snacks of debatable worth, instead of quality that can stand the test of time; I’ll see your drum flavor of the month and raise you two Papa Jo’s.
