‘If the band trusts you and you are clear, you can’t lose.’ As drummers so much is vying for our attention. What cuts through the noise is keeping the two objectives front and center: clarity and trust. If your ideas are polished and the band has faith in you, all the other elements will fall into place. When you become the lighthouse guiding the ship, you give those around you the gift of freedom. The spirit of music needs to be reassured by your leadership to be set free. But the moment that trust is threatened, everyone gets on edge. Is this person only out for themselves? Are they even listening? What will they do next? To play with clarity is to play with passion.
