The Power of Yes and No

In this month’s feature interviews, both Questlove and Florrie mention the merits of saying “Yes,” and learning the benefits of saying “No.” Peter Erskine has loosely addressed this in his Modern Drummer Jazz Insights column as well. When a musician is developing their career, it is sage advice to say YES to every playing opportunity that comes their way. I’m glad I followed this advice, and today I recommend this to any aspiring musician. There are many reasons to follow this practice. Firstly, when you are building a musical career, work comes from interactions with other musicians and these interactions happen (among other places) on gigs. Work begets work. You might meet another musician on a “little gig” that could lead to bigger gig, that will lead to another, and another… And there will be different musicians on every gig.
