Persistence

As I read this month’s Modern Drummer, I see a common theme, persistence. Unfortunately, as I look around the musical world (and the world in general,) I see less and less of it. There seems to be a lot of “one and done” artists, drummers, and people (in general) around today. I see the phrase, “I took my shot,” “I tried,” and “I made the best of it,” too much. Drumming, the music business, and life is hard. Immediate Gratification seems to rule the day, but that kind of success is very fleeting. Hence the past tense words like “took,” “tried,” and “made” being used. Success comes from persistence, living in the present, being present, looking and pushing forward. When I look at successful drummers like Pat Petrillo, Brann Dailor, Zac Farro, Mark Kelso, Phil Seamen, and Peter Erskine; I see persistence, I feel them pushing forward. Chipping away, looking […]
