Drummers don’t often get a chance to retire, and if they do, our community of drummers doesn’t give people gold watches or big retirement sendoffs. Maybe it’s because musicians usually don’t really want or need to retire “officially”, not to mention if it’s even financially possible for many musicians. Some older drummers just slow things down and thin out their schedules, and we as the drumming community should celebrate that luxury. Of course, we always want to hear more and more great drumming from our favorite drummers. But if a musician gets to the point where they can slow down and enjoy their life away from a lifetime and constant schedule of performances, touring, sessions, or educating, that should be applauded by the entire drumming community.
