For drummers who have followed this Rhythmic Vocabulary Development series exploring meters like 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, and 13/8, this final chapter brings us to one of the most open and fascinating meters yet—15/8. At first glance, it looks daunting. But once broken down and felt as smaller rhythmic shapes, 15/8 becomes an expansive landscape for phrasing, groove, and melodic drumming. I personally like playing in larger meters as it provides more space to create. Understanding the Shape of 15/8Fifteen eighth notes per measure can feel excessive, but as we’ve discovered throughout this series, grouping can be used to define pulse, feel, and musicality.
