Hello, MD readers, my name is Andre Jevnik. I’m eighteen years old and I’ve been playing drums for ten years. My interest in music came into play when I was seven. I really wanted to play guitar but my mom said no because my father was a drummer and so was my uncle and cousin. She figured we already had a drumset in the house and drummer genes ran through my veins, so drum lessons it was. I’m so glad that she convinced me to play. The drums are my life. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

My passion took off when I started playing with my first band. We were a trio very influenced by Rush. We played as many shows as we could and we wrote and recorded our own songs. We were young but it taught us to be polished and professional. Since then I’ve played in several bands and won a few drumming competitions. I enter competitions because they keep me on my toes as a player. There’s nothing more nerve wracking than trying to show a judge all the skills you possess along with a great stage show on a basic five-piece kit in a three-minute time frame. It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. I feel it has helped me to grow as a musician.

My musical influences come from jazz, prog, rock, and funk. The drummers that I enjoy watching are Mike Mangini, Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, John Blackwell, and Carmine Appice. I’m also particular about my gear. I’m a Sabian guy—I love their cymbals. They have a sound like no other, and every line of their cymbals sound great. I play Tama a Starclassic Performer B/B kit in Shattered Turquoise finish. They are beautiful on stage and they sound amazing.

The band that I am in now is called The All Ways. We are a rock/pop group out of New City, New York. We just released the video for our song “Where I Belong.” It was a lot of fun filming it. (See the link below to watch the video)

I’d like to thank Modern Drummer for letting me introduce my band and myself to their blog section. I hope you’ll check us out and let us know what you think.
