Mayhem Week! Brann Dailor of Mastodon

Brann Dailor of MastodonThe Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem tour has been amazing so far. I kind of knew it would be a lot of fun when I saw the lineup. We’ve been friends with most of the bands on the bill for a long time, making it a lot easier to be away from home.

There are some really incredible drummers out here; I think the powers that be should seriously consider adding death metal drumming to the Olympics. It’s hard to find that kind of energy while playing on the surface of the sun. It’s been really hot out here. Some days it feels like you’re locked in vicious cockfight with a giant yellow ball in the sky, but more fun.

The fans never cease to amaze me, out in the sun all day, going crazy for all the bands without passing out or throwing up. Actually, I did see a young man having a private heavy metal vomit party with a tree. Who said you can’t have too much fun? The road crew and production are super-pro, so everything runs like clockwork, except when Mother Nature comes into play. Advertisement

The other day in Albuquerque, about an hour before we went on, the sky went black ten miles in the distance. Twenty minutes later that storm hit the stage with thunder and lightning and all that comes with it. I was a little nervous watching the lighting trusses swing back and forth. All of the equipment was quickly wrapped in sheets of plastic and unplugged. I thought we might not play, but ten minutes before our set time, Zeus decided to show us a little mercy and the rain stopped. Organized chaos ensued as stagehands and road crew scrambled to get us up and running on time. Next thing you know we were rocking and everything was back to normal. That little shot of adrenaline really helps for a good rock show.

Here’s a tip for you drummers out there: Don’t pour water on your bass drum pedals–very slippery, not a good idea.

This tour is really fun; I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who is a fan of a good time. Hope to see you on the sun.

Your friend, Brann
