Buddy Rich, “Love for Sale,” from a 1982 YouTube Performance; and “Apples, (aka Gino,)” from BigSwing Face (1996 CD Reissue)

This month I have the honor of producing two transcriptions for a special issue celebrating the great Buddy Rich. Volumes have been written about this phenomenal drummer over the years, and there is little that I could add to his legacy. What I can share, however, is a personal story about my own witness to greatness. The transcription of “Love for Sale” comes from a 1982 performance that I found on YouTube. I chose this version not only so it could be compared with the 1967 performance of “Apples” (also featured in this issue,) but also because 1982 was the year I was fortunate enough to witness Buddy perform live.
