Thematic Drum Solo By Jazz Great Ralph Peterson At PASIC 2013

Ralph Peterson, Jr. is an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He began on percussion at age three and played trumpet in high school and college. In 1983, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as the second drummer, playing with the group for several years. He has also worked with Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Walter Davis, Tom Harrell, Branford Marsalis, David Murray, Roy Hargrove, Jon Faddis, and Dewey Redman.

Ralph Peterson Jr. currently teaches at Berklee College of Music and runs his own company, Onyx Productions.

Peterson is an endorsing artist for Mapex, Meinl, Evans, and Vic Firth.

Here, Ralph plays an open drum solo based on several melodic themes, including the Thelonius Monk tune “Monk’s Dream.”
