Ed Soph’s Opening Solo From PASIC 2013


Ed Soph is an American jazz drummer and world-class educator. He has played with the big bands of Clark Terry, Bill Watrous, and Woody Herman, as well as the small groups of Bill Evans, Randy Brecker, Joe Henderson, Cedar Walton, Dave Liebman, Chris Potter, Carl Fontana, and Slide Hampton, among others.

Soph is currently a professor in the jazz studies and performance divisions of the college of music at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.

In this solo, shot at PASIC 2013, Soph demonstrates many of the ideas he discussed during his master class, which covered ways to play more melodically on the drumset. His solo is based on the jazz standard “How Deep is the Ocean?”.

ED Soph is an artist clinician for Yamaha, Zildjian, Evans, and Innovative Percussion.
