Yamaha Hipgig – a 20+ year update

This Yamaha Rick Marotta Signature Hipgig drum kit made in 2000 has been updated by John Cutbill, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. “I wanted the opportunity to consider other equipment and configuration options while still retaining the intended design concept of a portable performance kit.” All drums are hand-crafted in Japan and matched with cherry wood lacquer finish. The original 7-ply birch/mahogany 6×10 and 7×13 mounted toms nest easily into the two-piece 20×16 bass drum. A fuller sound was achieved by replacing the 5×12 snare with a 6.5×13 Yamaha Sensitive Series 7-ply maple snare. The bass drum handle was removed, allowing a fourth bass drum pipe clamp to be installed. Tom holders were installed in the front and rear pipe clamps with the ride and splash cymbals mounted on the front holder, and the tom-tom and boom cowbell holder (with jam block) mounted on the rear holder.
