Drum Workshop’s John Good has been experimenting for years with a hybrid shell idea that would provide the lowest fundamental tone from a drum shell without sacrificing strength. After much experimenting, he finally succeeded. That prompted DW to send Modern Drummer a four-piece drum set to see what we thought. To be completely transparent, long before playing this kit, I’d heard about this idea, and was totally intrigued with what I had read about Purple Core shells. Purpleheart wood is an extremely dense and rigid hardwood that exudes strength and low-end response. After much research, I had to hear one for myself. I pulled the trigger and ordered a Maple Purple Core snare drum for my kit, and it did not disappoint!
