Drummer Blog: Moussa Fadera of The Amazing on Using His Jazz Roots in a Rock Context

For my tenth birthday my mom gave me a Hollywood kit in the sizes 12″, 14″, 18″. Back then I listened to bands and artists such as Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. The way the drums sounded on recordings from the ’60s and ’70s really attracted me. I still feel that the sound of the vintage drums brings a certain character and vibe and has a great impact on the sound of a band.

When I was in my early twenties I started listening to jazz. I got really inspired by drummers like Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Art Taylor, Frankie Dunlop, and Elvin Jones.

For the last ten years I’ve been playing and traveling through Europe and the U.S. and with artists such as Rodriguez, Freddie Redd, and mostly with the Amazing. I try not to separate the different genres too much. Playing with the Amazing gives me a lot of freedom to improvise, and the way we play together isn’t that different from playing with a jazz group. I basically use the same drums and cymbals that I use in a jazz setting when playing in any other situation to get the specific sound that I like.

I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the Modem Drummer blog.
