Description

It’s been our firm belief for many years at Modern Drummer that every serious student of drumming should have an understanding of, and an appreciation for, the rich heritage of the art form. Our primary purpose in publishing this text is to present to drummers a reference source that would offer a real sense of that heritage, while at the same time pay tribute to those artists who shaped and molded our history.

The Great Jazz Drummers looks back on nearly a century of drumming activity. The 62 drummer profiles that follow offer an accurate perspective of how the story has unfolded-a story that began during the ’20s in New Orleans, progressed through the legendary big band drummers of the ’30s, the bop pioneers of the ’40s and ’50s, and the ’60s and ’70s free stylists and fusionists, and continues with the great players of today who have brought the art to such a high level.
