Hello fans of music, drumming, and Modern Drummer! Dave DiCenso here, checking in with my first MD blog. I’m happy to let you know I’m currently touring with the amazing singer Josh Groban. We’re playing some great gigs and a lot of firsts for me, including Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and the legendary outdoor amphitheater Red Rocks. We’re playing these and many other cities and countries this year in support of Josh’s new album, All That Echoes, which, by the way, features some awesome drumming courtesy of the mighty Abe Laboriel Jr., and the equally awesome Matt Chamberlain and Curt Bisquera.
Aside from copping and “re-flavoring” parts from some of my favorite drummers, I also like the diversity of the music on Josh’s gig. I’m playing with sticks, brushes, mallets, and shakers, and sometimes two or more of the former within one tune. The gig is challenging, in that there is a lot of stylistic and dynamic contrast in the show. You really have to be able to wear different hats convincingly, and you have to be able to go from a roar to a whisper, and make both, and everything in between, work in an arena, not to mention making it all work with the fourteen or more people on stage. This, for me anyway, is not a walk in the park.
For those of you who may be thinking, Who is this guy, anyway?, I invite you to check out my YouTube videos, including this one from the Modern Drummer Festival 2006. Also, please visit my Facebook Fan Page and like me, won’t you? I will check in again in the near future. I hope you all are well and enjoying the music in your life!
