Donn Bennett Museum Adds Kits Used By Hal Blaine And Elvin Jones

Bookmark and Share

Donn Bennett Drum Studio in Bellevue, Washington, has added some noteworthy items to its drum museum, including drumsets used by the legendary Hal Blaine and Elvin Jones. These drums join gear used by the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Yes, Cheap Trick, Bad Company and more.

The Hal Blaine exhibit features three kits the drummer used between the early ’60s and the late ’80s, including a Ludwig set outfitted with Gretsch timbales instead of toms and a Pearl kit. There is also a large collection of Blaine’s Phil Spector–era “Wall Of Sound” percussion instruments. The centerpiece of the exhibit is Hal’s legendary “monster set.” This ten-drum kit—one of two identical setups that Blaine used to record thousands of pop songs—is one of the most recorded musical instruments ever. It was custom built by Howie Oliver and Rick Faucher in 1969 and was in near constant use until the mid-’80s.

The Elvin Jones exhibit has grown with the recent acquisition of Gretsch, Tama, Camco, and Yamaha drums and Zildjian and Istanbul cymbals used throughout Jones’s remarkable career. Currently on display are the drummer’s early-’70s yellow Gretsch set and an array of his sticks, brushes, mallets, and cymbals.
