Latin Jazz Percussionist Sheila E. Is Keynote Speaker For Musician's Institute Spring Graduation Ceremony Musicians Institute is proud to announce that Sheila Escovedo, known to the world as Sheila E., will serve as keynote speaker for the Spring 2010 graduation ceremony taking place on Saturday, March 20 at L.A.’s classic Wiltern Theater. Ms. Escovedo will also be awarded an honorary doctorate by Musicians Institute. Sheila Escovedo began her musical journey at the age of three, picking up the drumsticks while watching her father, legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo, in rehearsal. Two years later, she performed solo before a live audience for the first time. Before the age of 20, she was performing and/or recording with such heavyweight jazz influences as George Duke, Herbie Hancock, and Billy Cobham as well as countless pop artists, including Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, Babyface, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Nicks, among others. In the ‘80s, with encouragement from her friend Prince, Escovedo stepped to the front of the stage and into pop stardom, releasing such hits worldwide hits as “The Glamorous Life” and “Love Bizarre” and contributing to numerous Prince tours and recording projects. The graduation ceremony will include student awards, live performances by student bands and recognition of graduating MI students; attendance is limited to graduating students and their families.
