Bad Acid Trip Lynch The Weirdo
Jose Perez
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6
Deftly fusing the quirkiness of bands like DEVO and The Melvins with the trashy, hurried punk edge of The Locust, Los Angeles? Bad Acid Trip provides one absurdly dizzying jaunt, all without the assistance of their moniker?s narcotics. Blazingly fast drummer JOSE PEREZ constantly ignites his shells with ridiculous blast-beat fury. And when he?s not preoccupied with attempts to destroy the sound barrier?check out the ending of ?Beef Moo? for one of many startling examples?Perez toys with serrated patterns, generally slamming away with reckless abandon. Rarely has music been presented in such an intriguing sonic blur. |
Bad Plus, The These Are The Vistas
Dave King
Media Type: CD
RATING: 9

This is an outstanding launch, sure to rocket this fearless acoustic jazz trio to crossover cult success. Ethan Iverson (piano), DAVE KING (drums), and Reid Anderson (bass) ply jazz sophistication fortified by the visceral attack and grinning irreverence of rock. But the kids are alright. Their mischief smartly navigates tight, surprising compositions, and the interplay boasts clear purpose. Unlikely covers such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" are no joke. King is a kitchen sink jester, strafing his kit and trinkets with frantically shifting textures. His sonically open kit work is both artfully free and slyly grooving. File under "Fresh Air." |
Bad Religion The Process Of Belief
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

The Process Of Belief sees LA punk veterans Bad Religion replacing injured drummer Bobby Schayer with the young blood of BROOKS WACKERMAN. A slight regression in sound will please the punk purists who treasured the band?s early releases. With his fierce, driving double-kick patterns, it?s clearly evident Wackerman never sought to emulate the former skinsman. And while Schayer?s reserve is missed on certain points, Wackerman?s consistency and solid skills more than make up for that. (Epitaph) |
Badenya-Les Fr?res Coulibaly S?niw
Souleymane Coulibaly, Ouss?ni Coulibaly, Lassina Coulibaly, Kalifa Diarra, Abdoulaye Diarra (perc, vcl)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6

Full of fire and brawn, the music of the Coulibaly brothers (and several family members) delivers a spirited sound of percussion and voice rooted in West African tradition. But this stripped-down drum & voice format lends crackling purist intensity. A tight, aggressive multi-djembe attack dominates, supported by strong balafon lines and soaring ensemble vocals. Big Dumb Face Duke Lion Fights The Terror
Wes Borland (all instruments)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6

Big Dumb Face is Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland's entertaining side project, offering truly bizarre fare that sounds like the soundtrack to an evil cartoon. Wes plays everything here-guitars, drums, programming, whatever-supporting warped songs with warped humor and warped vocals that often sound like a gang of munchkins. But a big part of the weirdness here is the frequently amusing grooves (often delightfully playing off cliche) that support these songs. While it might not be for everyone, be careful, it just might grow on you. (Flawless/Geffen) |
Big Phat Band XXL
Dresel, Brinker, Erskine
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8

Gordon Goodwin?s group is as versatile, funky, and spontaneous as a big band can be. A lot of credit for that has to go to the rhythm section and how they interpret those 8th notes. Drummer BERNIE DRESEL comes out charging, his hard-swinging shuffle driving "High Maintenance," and RAY BRINKER handles two orchestrated pop tunes nicely. PETER ERSKINE, ever precise and soulful, is brought in for five of the most challenging cuts here, including the driving funk of "A Game Of Inches" with Michael Brecker, and the madcap Hannah Barbara-meets-Stan Kenton feeling of "Hunting Wabbits." Bill Bruford's Earthworks Footloose And Fancy Free
Bill Bruford
Media Type: CD
RATING: 9

It all converges here for BILL BRUFORD. Earthworks? acoustic jazz is informed by the drummer?s prog-rock/fusion past, spinning out long, unusual extended forms and, of course, tantalizing odd meters. On this live London date, the sax/piano/bass/drums unit hits a new peak, breathing together, mutually sculpting the complex tunes. And it?s brilliant how Bruford is so aggressively commanding and interactively yielding at the same time. He sounds even more individualistic without electronics. The double CD will also have a companion DVD release, Footloose In NYC, featuring another live date. Bruford, it seems, never stops growing. |
Bill Bruford's Earthworks Random Acts Of Happiness

BILL BRUFORD?s instrumental jazz is sophisticated and cerebral. This beautifully documented set, recorded live at Yoshi?s in Oakland, California, reveals the legendary drummer?s best playing to date. His articulate and dynamic hand technique defines perfection. Bruford has gracefully sculptured an acoustic progressive jazz style that is distinctively his own. (www.billbruford.com) |
Bill Evans Big Fun
Vinnie Colaiuta
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

Former Miles Davis saxophonist Bill Evans hasn?t played much jazz since he left The Prince Of Darkness, preferring instead to relive the soul sounds of Booker T. and Junior Walker, albeit with killer rhythm sections. VINNIE COLAIUTA?s work here furthers the plan, as he plays it mean, slick, and sharp as nails. Funkier and more furious than anything he recorded with Sting, Vinnie?s playing stretches as much as possible within the confines of a commercial funk/soul setting that features Hiram Bullock and Les McCann. No great surprises, though plenty of heat between the cracks. But Willie Nelson singing Buffalo Springfield?s "For What It?s Worth"? Bleeccch. |
Bill O'Connell Latin Jazz Project Black Sand
Steve Berrios
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8

Though Horacio Hernandez and Antonio Sanchez get all the Latin-jazz props, STEVE BERRIOS has been a Latin master longer, and he still burns with a spacious groove and perfect articulation. Black Sand is a must-have. With pianist O?Connell?s broad rhythmic panorama, Berrios authentically plays bossa, montuno, rhumba, 6/4 and 6/8 Afro-Cuban, and swing with the exacting confidence that comes from playing in the Latin trenches. Billy Cobham North By Northwest
Billy Cobham (dr)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8

A couple of years back Billy released one of the finest albums of his career, the acoustic jazz?based Nordic. North By Northwest, while not quite as strong, still beautifully showcases this more contemplative Cobham era. Billy navigates the compositions with a confident?but not dominating?approach. Yes, his superchops are still evident. But what?s really emerging at this point in Cobham?s play is a deeper appreciation for touch, timbre, and the moment. ( www.billycobham.com ) |
Bisquera Brothers Bisquera Brothers
Curt Bisquera
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8
At no time on this family affair does CURT BISQUERA?s drumming get in the way?rather, it is the way. This is groovesmanship of the highest order, caressing the time. The room positively opens up on "Lester?s Intro," when the first-call LA drummer goes to the hesitating beat on ride cymbal, then breaks it down with the flam rimshots. ("Flamshots"?) "Leon?s Mess" provides Bisquera with the canvas he needs to lay down one of the year?s best inverted funk beats. "Let The James Begin" shows off CB?s concepts of sounds and dynamics, as he pops it with snares off, again with a killer cross-stick. Forgive them for the sappy "Close To You." Folks, this is syncopation class. (www.bisquerabrothers.com) |
Bleach Astronomy (The Legacy Of A Hero)
Jared Byers
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6
Hitting along the same lines as Jimmy Eat World or Foo Fighters, Nashville?s Bleach aren?t developing rocket science with Astronomy, but perhaps that?s not the point. If you take cues from drummer JARED BYERSM? performance, he?s all about laying an unwavering pattern that complements the ever-present impenetrable wall of guitars. And he pulls it off with great success: The trick tom phrasing on the pre-chorus of "Plan To Pull Through" feels secure, as does the smartly composed floor tom/hi-hat intro of "Living." Byers is a prime model of playing drums using your head, not just your hands. |
Bleachmobile Detonator

Excuse me while I peel myself off the floor. Okay, I think I can talk now. The little white van that ran me over had Japanese plates; I definitely remember that. And three young women were in the front seat, pounding the dashboard, eyes rolling insanely. I also remember hearing inhumanly fast and precise thrash music with shocking moments of calm, plus lyrics a Japanese/English dictionary couldn?t help decipher. Oh no, here they come again! One?s leaning out the window, drumsticks waving. "My name is SAYURI, and IIIIIIII ruuuuuuuule!!!" There they go. I hope they come back soon. Bliss 66 Trip To The 13th
Bob Cook (dr)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

Drummer Bob Cook plays well beyond his years throughout, sounding as comfortable as a seasoned session player. Cook plays powerful, well-thought-out drum parts on every cut of the album, which is filled with excellent songwriting and very strong melodies. Mega-producer Glenn Ballard directs the band, which at times sounds a little like a cross between Collective Soul and a heavier Matchbox Twenty, while still maintaining a sound of their own. Check this one out; it?s well worth it. (Epic) |
Blood Brothers, The Burn Piano Island, Burn
Mark Gajadhad
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8

Seattle?s Blood Brothers crossed party lines, opting to ink a deal with ArtistDirect and producing with Ross Robinson?not really behavior bands from the oft-elitist indie scene regularly engage in. But if Burn Piano Island, Burn is any indicator, it?s definitely for the better. MARK GAJADHAR?s highly dynamic drumming is frenetic, urgent, and tasteful; check out "Ambulance Vs. Ambulance" or "USA Nails" for prime examples of his decision-making prowess. This newest wave of spastic, high-energy post-punk has bred a litter of fine drummers. Go ahead and add Gajadhar to that list. |
Blue Man Group, The The Complex
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

Alien appearances aside, The Blue Man Group create accessible music, carrying tunes by using percussion tools of their own creation. On this sophomore effort, BMG moves into the rock context. Surprisingly, the drums, though decidedly complex, are not the centerpiece of all of these tunes. Unlike the band's live performances, The Complex employs guest musicians, among them Tracy Bonham and Dave Matthews, to elevate these tunes above their rhythmic foundations. For those who are looking for the melodious "pop" and "snap" that BMG typically generates, fear not. The opener, "Above," is a kind of symphony of percussion, featuring BMG's PVC vinyl tube-drum invention. www.blueman.com. |
Blues Traveler Bridge
Brendan Hill (dr, perc)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8

Veteran group Blues Traveler draws on the jam-band ethic and knows how to harness it in songs with great hooks. The vocal heritage casts an eye as far back as folkster Cat Stevens, as does the drumming, which is "Pretty" Purdie?like in its funkiness. Brendan Hill?s cleanly recorded, chunky grooves and crystalline ride patterns keep these songs dancing. Hill seems to have an innate understanding of how to play lots of knickknacks drummers like to hear without getting obtrusive. (A&M) |
Bobby Previte & Bump Just Add Water?
Media Type: CD
RATING: 9

With this ensemble jazz outing, Previte attacks odd meters with swinging, imaginative phrasing, and drives these catchy melodies with syncopated snare patterns and delightfully funky grooves. Previte, who composed and arranged all but one of the tracks, perfectly enhances and contrasts the very essence of each tune through his bold, brash, and sometimes subtle performances. An engaging, rare achievement. (Palmetto) |
Box Car Racer Box Car Racer
Travis Barker
Media Type: CD
RATING: 9

Sometimes you just have to show it all off and gloat, especially if you feel creatively restricted, as did Blink-182?s TRAVIS BARKER. So along with B-182 guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge, the duo assembled a more experimental, serious-minded project, Box Car Racer. With the extra latitude afforded him, Barker shines like never before--seamless 16th/32nd-note shifts, driving tribal tom patterns, and just-perfect cymbal tinkles are all over this stylistic mixed bag of thirteen tracks. We always knew Barker was a pretty great punk drummer, but we never really knew how great--until now. |
Bozzio/Mastelotto Bozzio/Mastelotto
Terry Bozzio and Pat Mastelotto
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8
TERRY BOZZIO and PAT MASTELOTTO, two earthquake-shaken Los Angeles transplants both now residing in Austin, Texas, join creative forces for an acoustic instrumental collection of percussive soundscapes that reveal their combined genius and love for improvised music. These totally improvised, organic percussive compositions range from world ambient to total avant-garde, using such abstract sources as bowed & super ball?rubbed gongs to electric hand-drill mallets. Bozzio even adds a 3/4-scale violin on "Jack Benny." These veterans of sonic explorations have created an acoustically mysterious and spiritually enchanting soundtrack. (www.terrybozzio.com). |
Bozzio/Wackerman Alternative Duets/Private Conversations
Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman
Media Type: CD
RATING: 9

The recordings on this two-volume set highlight the intimate musical connection between Terry Bozzio and Chad Wackerman, and the potential for drums and percussion to provide the hook as well as the groove. Songs are titled by the city, state, and date recorded. Each contains fine examples of melodic drumming, one player setting up the foundation with space to spare, and the other delivering thoughtful solo parts on top with tuned percussion, bells, and cymbals. Bozzio and Wackerman fall into powerful unison parts, and then into lulls that give breath. This is not a chops fest. These guys are playing songs. It?s intriguing to hear the melodies introduced, then built up into thunderous, joyful, highly evolved orchestrations. (P.O. Box 163005, Austin, TX 78716, www.terrybozzio.com) |
BPM&M XtraKcts & ArtifaKcts
Pat Mastelotto
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6

As King Crimson incorporates ideas from techno music into its ever-evolving sound, it?s only fitting that someone takes Crimson snippets, chops them up, and rearranges them into a strange electronic hybrid. That someone happens to be the group?s drummer, PAT MASTELOTTO, along with his knob-tweaking pal Bill Munyon. The results often sound like way-out jams by Crimson or one of its side ProjeKcts. Some of it might get ?em dancing at a rave, but much of it forgoes repetitive, accessible beats in favor of wacky soundscapes. Part of the fun for diehards will be recognizing familiar bits in a new context. (www.papabear.com) |
Breaking Benjamin We Are Not Alone
Jeremy Hummel
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6
Filled with vocal hooks and crunchy guitar lines, Breaking Benjamin?s new one delivers one solid, heavy, modern rock performance after another. The band?s dark-hued songs tend to revolve around light texture and heavy groove, augmented by soaring vocal melodies. Throughout the album, JEREMY HUMMEL?s drumming authoritatively supports the songs, aiding the transitions between sections. The opening track, ?So Cold,? immediately captures the ear, setting up the rest of the album, which, while lacking a little in variety, is a strong record overall. |
Brian McKnight Diffusion Project

There?s DYI written all over this album, and that?s a good thing. We get to hear various New York City drummers and their drums unfettered by big studio processing. The drumkit has rarely sounded so vibrant, what with harmonics buzzing around and no compression in sight. BRIAN MCKNIGHT comes from the Terry Bozzio school, both in terms of chops and reverence for composition. His compatriot drummers, GEORGE MOURTOS and BRIAN DELANEY, provide solid company, while MIKE CAMPENNI distinguishes himself on a surprisingly melodic drum rendition of the old Monk ditty "Well You Needn?t." Did we say "DYI"? You purchase this one via e-mail. (bm10031@yahoo.com) |
Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special Ignition!
Bernie Dresel (dr)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

With an established rhythm section of drummer Bernie Dresel and bassist Mark W. Winchester (both of whom also perform in The Brian Setzer Orchestra), Ignition! serves some very accessible rockabilly tracks, much in the vein of a tamed Reverend Horton Heat. Dresel's shuffles are crisp and authentic, and they steer the trio with a bouncy, swingy authority while maintaining the ever-present downbeat. And Dresel is able to lock down the straight-ahead rock drive in "'59" quite nicely. Ignition! makes for a sincere fusion of the present and past. (Surfdog) |
Brooke Sofferman The Green Between
Brooke Sofferman
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7
My crystal ball names BROOKE SOFFERMAN as one of the rising young indie jazzers to watch. On his second outing, the drummer/composer/leader delivers an upbeat sound, more focused than on his previous disc. Sofferman's acoustic ensembles are at ease here, having fun playing his concise, clever tunes. As always, star Boston tenor man Jerry Bergonzi unreels rich solos. The drummer's crisp, popping touch and high-tuned drums reflect the sunny positivism of his writing. Mixing a myriad of grooves, from straight-ahead to a splash of reggae, Sofferman's hungry enthusiasm shines. Place future bets that the buzz will grow. |
Buckcherry Time Bomb
Devon Glenn
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

Time Bomb is the reason they put mega-bass on portable stereos. You?ll need it for the raucous opener "Frontside" to get the full Guns N? Roses effect. Devon Glenn is a fine straight-up rock drummer who doesn?t resort to clich? double bass pedal. In fact, his single kick work on "Porno Star," smack on the money, is right out of John Bonham. Throughout Time Bomb, Glenn?s many tom fills are well placed and thundering. "Without You" is a classic rock ballad on which Glenn holds the back-of-the-beat feel with authority. And "Helpless" would fire up any arena. (Dreamworks) |
Built To Spill Ancient Melodies Of The Future
Scott Plouf
Media Type: CD
RATING: 7

Literate, tuneful, and way-okay on their axes, Built To Spill nonetheless don?t hit you over the head with their charms. It?s not that they?re "out," it?s just that their qualities unfold in time; you notice a beautiful guitar line today, a clever rhythmic device tomorrow. Two weeks later you?re online looking for chat rooms about them. The same can be said of drummer Scott Plouf |
Burning Airlines Identikit
Peter Moffett (dr)
Media Type: CD
RATING: 6

Like it's predecessor, Burning Airlines' second album, Identikit, is filled with guitar-driven post-punk modern rock songs. Throughout the album, it's obvious that Moffett plays for the song. But the notable element in his playing is how he uses one idea as the foundation for each song, keeping other concepts in reserve. If you're looking for minimal but aggressive drumming, Identikit is a good place to start. (DeSoto) |
Burnt By The Sun Soundtrack To The Personal Revolution
David White
Media Type: CD
RATING: 8

Many bands combine metal, hardcore punk, and noise rock, yet too many end up with a big, sloppy mess. Not Burnt By The Sun, whose deft approach yields inventive results on their first full-length. If any group can pummel your eardrums into wonderful submission, it's BBTS. But it's how they augment their scorching attack with artful arrangements and cool sociopolitical wordplay that makes them so appealing. And keeping things especially intriguing is DAVID WITTE, with well-placed fills, humongous power, and a talent for juggling numerous time signatures. |
Buzzcocks Inventory
John Maher
Media Type: CD
RATING: 9

They?re less nihilistic than the Sex Pistols and not as sociopolitical as The Clash. But the Buzzcocks are the catchiest of the original British punk bands. The fourteen CDs in this box set replicate each 7" EP the still-going band released between 1977 and 1981. The bristling earliest numbers like "Breakdown," "Orgasm Addict," and "What Do I Get" are some of the finest pop-punk numbers to date. Hooks continue to abound?while vocalist Pete Shelley?s lyrics stay uniquely vulnerable?on "Autonomy," "Just Lust," and the mesmerizing "I Believe." Amidst all the wonderful melodies is JOHN MAHER?s captivating and powerful drumming. Note his opening mini-solo on "Moving Away From The Pulse Beat." Without Maher, this Inventory wouldn?t be nearly as infectious. |
