Gergo Dorozsmai of The Moog

Gergo Dorozsmai of The MoogHi! I’m Gergo Dorozsmai, drummer for the Moog. I’ve never blogged before, so it’s an honor to write my first one for Modern Drummer! I’m from Budapest, Hungary, and I like to play drums, I do it for fun. And what do I like musically? I saw the band Two Gallants in Vienna recently, and how they played together, it really blew me away, I mean not being musically contrived at all, just there in feeling and everything. I thought to myself, They play what they actually want to play, what comes to their minds. So that’s what I would like to do one day, just being so sure in myself in what I do to just play and not think about what musical figuration to pull off. I think I’m getting there–I practice every day, and luckily I have a Roland V-Drum set. I think it’s an amazing thing to be able to practice in the living room with the TV on. I used to practice on the full kit, but I gave it up. I’m still doing the practice from the sheet music I got a long time ago–like jazz originally written in the ’70s in Hungary.

In drummer context, I listen to a lot of Pink Floyd and I love the impertinence of Nick Mason. I think he is a great drummer; I love his sound, especially his ride playing. I also listen to Refused, The Shape Of Punk To Come–if you haven’t listened to it, please do, I don’t think I’ve heard more powerful stuff. It’s kind of like Rage Against The Machine. Also, Moe Tucker from the Velvet Underground is a favorite.

Many thanks to Geoff Ott, producer/engineer of our new album, Razzmatazz Orfeum, for tuning the drums on the record for me; he made it sound awesome!

Hope to meet some of you when the Moog tours the States later this year. Cheers, peace out!
