Jessica Simpson's Gorden

2008-11-07 Wassup, MD readers! My name is Gorden Campbell. I'm an LA—based drummer who grew up in Newburgh, New York. In my fifteen years of living in LA, I've been blessed to have worked in some great situations and with some great artists, including Earth Wind & Fire, George Duke, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Ne-Yo, and now Jessica Simpson. I've also had the pleasure of working on some great movie soundtracks, like Be Cool, Dreamgirls, and Semi-Pro.
Right now Jessica has a country CD out, so I had to brush up on my country feel, lol! Who would've thunk it–me doing a country gig! All I have to say is, YEEE HAWWWW, let's get it poppin'! Ha! We'll be heading out on tour in January with Rascal Flatts, and hopefully you'll come check the show out if we're in your town.
I always try to impress upon younger players the importance of being versatile. Having versatility, knowledge, and a vocabulary in a number of different styles is what keeps me busy. One day I might be playing in an orchestral setting with charts, and the next day I could be at a club blazing through some fusion tunes. It's very important to be ready for any call you may get!
I've also been doing a lot of producing, including a new CD/DVD called The Lilly Mack Sing-A-Long Series. It's a compilation of Gospel hits totally re-recorded in the studio, plus a live DVD. I'm very excited about this project.
Right now I'm at the Percussive Arts Society convention in Austin, Texas, where today (11/7) I'm doing a clinic with my good friend Taku Hirano, who is the percussionist for Bette Midler and Fleetwood Mac.
