War Stories' Adam Barker
2008-08-20 Hello all of my fellow drummers and percussionists. My name is Adam Barker (no relation to Travis), and I've been drumming for about thirteen years now. I'm a San Diego native, and ever since I hit puberty there's been nothing I wanted to do more than play drums for a living. I'm sure most of you can agree that there's nothing quite as exhilarating as playing your ass off on stage–whether it be to an empty club, or in front of 7,000 screaming kids.
I was always inspired watching videos of Dave Grohl and Neil Peart going balls-out behind the kit. So, at age thirteen my parents bought me my first kit for about $300. It was a piece of crap, as you can imagine, but it did the job for the time. I now play a four-piece DW satin oil kit with Zildjian A and A Custom cymbals, and DW and Gibraltar hardware. I use Vic Firth 5B wood-tip sticks and Evans heads. My Influences include Dave Grohl, John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Abe Cunningham, and Jojo Mayer, just to name a few.
In high school, I did the whole marching band and drum corps deal, which helped me dramatically with my chops. I began playing in my first band in 1998, which lasted for about a year and led me to meet my next bandmates in Hot Like A Robot, whom I played with for over seven years. I've done more D.I.Y. national and regional tours than I can count and have had some pretty amazing experiences on the road. As mentioned before, I've played my fair share of empty clubs and dive bars, and also played sold out House Of Blues shows and 10,000–person outdoor shows. It's just the love of playing drums that makes it all worthwhile.
I am now proud to be a part of War Stories, creating music that has a genuine message behind it. The other members and I have had our share of experience in the music industry and now have the ability to pool our knowledge and work together productively.
We released our debut record on August 19th and are planning on hitting the road in support of it. So, my friends, I hope this helps you get to know a little bit about me, and with any luck, maybe I'll be seeing more of you guys in the near future. Take care and keep up the rhythm.
