Quarter note = 60-70 You must play this kind of exercise at a speed that will allow you to recite eighth note triplets so that you can place the triplet properly and at the same time know where you are in the bar without effort. You should not feel clumsy just because you are playing at slow speeds. When you are practising it is important to understand and assimilate what you are playing. This is the only way to obtain good results and gain speed and confidence.
Combine eighth note triplets (three strokes per quarter note) and their application. Use this figure co-ordinating cymbal (Cym), bass drum (BD), snare (SN) and HiHat (HH). Practise the exercises ambidextrously on the drumkit. Apply ternary patterns in 4-4.
Playing any pattern without controlling the volume will limit you as an instrumentalist. As I have mentioned before, a drummer is distinguished by his or her mastery of the different parameters (musical knowledge, tempo, volume, independence, etc.). Taken all together, these qualities add up to what is known as musicality. In this exercise, make sure to control carefully the volume of your different strokes so the pattern progresses fluently.
