Quarter note = 60-70 You must play this kind of exercise at a speed that will allow you to recite eighth note triplets so that you can place the triplet properly and at the same time know where you are in the bar without effort. You should not feel clumsy just because you are playing at slow speeds. When you are practising it is important to understand and assimilate what you are playing. This is the only way to obtain good results and gain speed and confidence.
Combine eighth note triplets (three strokes per quarter note) and their application. Use this figure co-ordinating cymbal (Cym), bass drum (BD), snare (SN) and HiHat (HH). Practise the exercises ambidextrously on the drumkit. Apply ternary patterns in 4-4.
Remember to break up your time in a balanced way. If you have an hour and a half to practise daily, I recommend that you break up that time to practise different exercises, e.g. 5 min warm-up, 15 min progressions R-L, 15 min of hands-feet combinations, 20 min study of different methods, 15 min of basics, 20 min free practise to play along with recordings and in different styles.
