Quarter note = 60-70 In all the preceding exercises I recommended practising at fairly slow speeds. From this exercise on try to start off using the same system, beginning with speeds of 60 to 70 so that you have time to get used to hearing what you are playing. Then move on to higher speeds. Remember that most of the music that you will be playing will be at speeds of between 80 and 130 for quarter notes. Be especially careful to avoid mordents!

Combine eighth notes (two strokes per quarter note - "beat") and their application to the drumkit. Use this figure co-ordinating cymbal (Cym), bass drum (BD), snare (SN) and HiHat (HH). Practise the exercises ambidextrously on the drumkit. Apply patterns in 4-4
Control your volume and listen carefully to the interplay between the different components of the drumkit. Notice the proportion between the volume of the cymbal and the snare, or between the bass drum and the HiHat. Listen to recordings and pay attention to how they sound, analysing how in different kinds of music the volume is not always the same. For example, in jazz the cymbal is much more prominent than the other components. In other styles of music, such as rock or pop, the snare or the bass drum are more prominent.
